The Cow Crew

I haven't posted in awhile. I've been working on this 12x36 painting of cow faces. It is close to what I had in mind, but I may have to try this again sometime. Sure do love their expressions!

#43 Two For One

I think I've painted these guys separately, but not together for quite awhile. I love the curious looks.

#40 Quiet Time

I painted this a little while ago, but needed to make some adjustments, which I didn't get to until today. That's why the numbers are out of sequence. It's the same longhorn mama and calf as the other. Hope you like it!

#42 Swan Challenge

Another challenge from the DPW. It was a Valentine's challenge about animals that mate for life. Apparently swans are some that fit that category and besides that, they're so beautiful!

#38 Longhorn Mama and Calf

Our neighbors a few miles west of us have some Longhorns. Beautiful animals! I got some photos a few years ago in the summer and came across them today. Had to paint some!

#36 Let Me In!

One day when I was painting at home, my dog startled me by ferociously growling at the front door. Kind of scared me. We live in the country and he doesn't usually react that way to visitors. He's usually thrilled when someone shows up, so needless to say, I was a little hesitant to open the door. But when I did, I found this was who had come to visit! There was Riley, the dog, growling on the inside of the storm door and Mr. Goat, adamantly stomping his foot as if to say, "Let me in!"

Another neighborhood cow. Just a cute face that needed to be painted.

#34 Shady Lady

This little lady was next door, hanging out with some other heifers. I snapped this view of her when she had her head down snooping at Riley, the dog. By zooming in on her face, the surrounding legs and shadows created a fairly abstract background.

Bad Hair Day

We have Pelicans in Wyoming, which I thought was odd when I first moved here. (We also have sea gulls, also odd). I love to watch the Pelicans soar on a draft high in the sky, but this one was waiting for some fish in the river.

Day 29 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

We're down to the last couple for this challenge. I hope it's been as much fun for you as it has for me! Now that I feel like I'm in the swing of it, I'm going to try to keep it up for as long as I can.

Day 27 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

We're almost to the end of this challenge. It's certainly been challenging and a good chance to experiment a little. This cow isn't an experiment though. Just another pretty face - or not just another pretty face.

Day 20 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

I think I'm going to have to paint something else for a few days. I'm seeing cows in my sleep!

Day 19 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

Painting these sweet faced, curious cows for days in a row really makes me aware of their unique differences. I'm thinking of doing a larger painting with a full line-up once the challenge is over. I've got visions of cheery faces parading through my mind . . .

Day 18 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

Another red tag Hereford. I always think they look like they're showing off their "decorations". The recent paintings of all these cute cows, or heifers, I think my husband said, are from a group of photos I took one early summer day in the mountains near my home. It was a small herd and most were quite outgoing. When I see my photos of the groups it's quite fun to imagine their personalities showing through their expression.

Maybe one of these days I'll do a painting with all of them!

Day 17 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

I'm not sure if this guy is a Black Baldy or something else, but he sure is cute! I paid attention to the black in sunlight compared to the white in shadow. The white in shadow should still read as, well, white in shadow and be darker, or the same value as, the black in sunlight, which should still be recognizable as black. Not sure I pulled it off, but lots of fun!

Day 16 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

I have to admit, I'm more comfortable painting cows than I am painting cups. The planes on cows are so interesting, not to mention their expressions.
